To keep my students motivated, I would\u00a0introduce them to different music styles. When I built my first road band, we\u00a0became a crossover band to get decent paying gigs. We were a quintet with\u00a0me on a Hammond B3. There I was able to arrange harmonies and parts for\u00a0the other band members. We came up with our original sound on any style\u00a0of music we played.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in the airport music program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine told me about the airport performers. I tracked down\u00a0the person in charge and submitted a DVD. I was vetted and placed on the\u00a0performers&#8217; roster.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xq0na3qHIUI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>What keeps you coming back to play a non-paying gig?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the people. The workers, the staff and the travelers. I played many a gig\u00a0in my musical days, but I never had such a gratifying experience like here in\u00a0JAX airport. Playing for total strangers is a challenge, but this allows me to\u00a0play a lot of different music styles and be acknowledged\u00a0for my efforts. The extreme\u00a0gratification comes when I see the travelers and workers really enjoy my\u00a0compositions and performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Share a favorite experience you\u2019ve had at the airport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wow, there were so many. The best two are when I\u2019m playing a heavy song like the Phantom\u00a0of the Opera theme and about 3 or 4 little kids start to dance to it. That blows my mind as I watch\u00a0the parents smile at me as they video tape their kids with their cell phones. I know they will have\u00a0that memory forever. The 2nd experience is when a total stranger comes up to me and says I\u00a0made their day because they were feeling low and they never expected an experience like this\u00a0in an airport.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4_668Yj5Fvc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>What else would you like to mention?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I taught myself music theory while riding navy subs, I never realized that this God given\u00a0gift would be so mentally rewarding later in life as it is here at the airport. This gig allows me to expand my\u00a0musical and composition growth. This may sound silly, but sometimes when the airport is full, I\u00a0fantasize about playing Carnegie Hall with just me and my two keyboards. When there\u2019s just a\u00a0few people here, I think of the nights I played piano in the hotel lobby of a small nondescript town watching\u00a0the people nursing their drinks.
